How do you respond when your daughter asks you about potential skeletons in your past? Trisha Sellers of Bridgehaven Pregnancy Support Center in Cedar Rapids says, “don’t panic. This is an opportunity to ask God for wisdom. Then tell her that’s a really good question. What’s got you thinking about that?” This is a teachable moment we don’t want to miss.

- The first concern in pop and juices is the amount of sugar in them. We become habituated to sweet things. If we drink it regularly, our bodies will crave it more regularly. Obviously, sugary drinks add considerable calories to our diets and constitute as “empty calories” to many health officials.
- Read the labels before you drink. 100% all natural juice is not bad. Read the ingredient list to see what else is added into the juice. Make sure there isn’t any other added sugar ingredients. A good, natural and healthy juice brand is naked. The sugar that is in these juices is the sugar coming naturally from the fruit inside.
- Pop is a completely different story. Pop contains a high amount of phosphorous which leaches calcium from your bones and leaves you dehydrated. Diet soda isn’t any better. Studies show that “One liter of an aspartame-sweetened beverage can produce about fifty-six milligrams of methanol. When several of these beverages are consumed in a short period of time (one day, perhaps), as much as two hundred fifty milligrams of methanol are dumped into the bloodstream, or thirty-two times the EPA limit.( Carol Simontacchi from her book The Crazy)” So, you’re poisoning your body, too.
- Our bodies are made of 70% water; lose weight faster by hydrating yourself with pure water. Your body will run more efficiently and you will better!
- What should you drink? Here are some good options:
Lemonade
Iced tea (research shows it may fight cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and other ailments, especially green tea).
Tomato juice or V-8 (contains among other compounds lycopene, a potent cancer-fighting agent).
Orange juice
Apple juice or cider
Grape juice (recent news are that its antioxidants combat ill effects of second hand smoke and air pollution).
Other pure fruit juices
Chocolate milk.
Fruit slushies made with fresh or frozen real fruit, sugar if required, and water, milk or yogurt. Add a little fruit flavoring if you like, or try cinnamon.
Herbal teas, hot or cold, with honey or a little sugar if you need it sweeter.
Spiced or flavored teas
For sodas, try ginger ale in small quantities, which at least has real ginger in it.

TV 9 Meteorologist Justin Gerhts joined us on the Life 101.9 morning show to talk about the latest information available and to share some tips to help keep us safe during severe weather.
1) There’s an experiment in parts of Kansas and Missouri that will include some new wording in tornado warnings. It’s meant to be more “impact” based, because one tornado warning isn’t necessarily the same as another tornado warning. It’s not being done in Iowa yet, but if it goes well, it will be.
2) When a watch is issued, it’s time to start watching the weather a little more closely; severe storms could develop or move in. When you’re in a warning, it’s time to take action – severe weather is happening now or could be very soon.
3) It’s important to have several ways to get weather information. A weather radio and/or a phone calling service (like WeatherCall) are great because they let you know something is happening, day or night. Sources like TV9 and kcrg.com are helpful for getting more information. (More about WeatherCall: http://www.kcrg.com/weather/weathercall)
4) Take time to talk with your children about tornado safety. Allow them to participate in the conversation by inviting them to help select the safe place in your home. Ask them to find the lowest level interior room, away from windows, and allows them a place to crouch down in a safe place.

Eating healthy is one of the hardest things to do. Let alone leaving me to figure out if I’m actually eating too much OR not enough. Either one is equally harmful to our health well being. So my question is…”How do I know how much I should really be eating? What’s a healthy amount for my body, my height, my age, and my gender?”
Thankfully there are resources available. Many of these resources are free. Here are some of the links Brittney referenced on the Life 101.9 morning show.

By mid February most resolution setters have given up on their goals. Eating healthier is one of the hardest things to do. To stay on track to eating healthier, eat one serving of fruit and vegetables each day. Purchase easy to eat and transport fruit. Keep it at work, on the kitchen table, in your car! Easy options are: apples, bananas, grapes, oranges, broccoli, cauliflower, and baby carrots.

Drink, drink, drink—water!! Stay hydrated to get to your goal. Rule of thumb: drink half your body weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 200 lbs, drink 100 ounces or just over 2 liters of water each day. I like to buy the 1Liter water bottles and try to drink 1-2 each day for easy tracking.
Track your progress! Keep a journal, get a friend to talk to about your successes and failures of your goal. If you have a workout buddy, you are more likely to stick to your goal. Having someone else hold you accountable increases your ability to succeed!
