The Seeds 4 Seniors program in Linn County is help senior adults get the food and/or medical supplies they need. Not only do they have a food pantry and medical supplies available for those in need, but they’re raising produce in gardens around the property to help supplement that non-perishable items they already have. You can learn more about the project when you call them at 319-731-1333 or visit their website here.
Dr. James Coyle is the founder of Seeds 4 Seniors, and he took a few minutes to talk to me on the Afternoon Show about the project and how you could help.

I’m being totally honest when I tell you that my talk with Jason Gray is easily my favorite interview this year. You’ve heard his song “Remind Me Who I Am” on Life 101.9. Jason has an amazing heart and an incredible story, and I’m excited to be able to share some of that with you.
If you missed the interview on the Afternoon Show, you can listen to some segments below. Hear him tell the story of that song and talk about his speech impediment that God’s used as a way for him to minister to others. If you’d like to grab his full album, you can find it on the Life Store here.

This week’s Food Friday recipe is something my wife discovered, and I am anxious to give it a try. I love things that have some spice, and especially buffalo flavored stuff. This another recipe that requires a little work, but mostly just the time to stew in a crock pot. You can check out the original recipe on the blog My Kitchen Apron. Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients:
- 3 lb. bag of frozen chicken
- Buffalo sauce for hot wings (their blog recommends Frank’s)
- 2 tsb butter
- a packet of ranch dip mix
Directions
- Put the chicken, buffalo sauce, and ranch dip mix in the crock pot together. Cook it on low for 6-7 hours.
- Remove the chicken and shred it, then put it back in the crock pot with with the butter.
- Let it cook for another hour or so, then serve on buns for tasty meal!
It’s another Thursday, and I’ve got some ideas your family can use for this weekend, in case you’re itching for something to do.
- Chalk the Walk (Sunday May 6) – Your kids enjoy using sidewalk chalk on your driveway, but this weekend, they can watch some professionals go to town on the streets of Mount Vernon.
- Adam’s Eve – A Comedy Dinner Theater (Friday and Saturday May 4 and 5) – A night of theater that’ll make you laugh, plus food. This has some great date night potential. Cost is $25 per person for dinner.
- Tulip Festival (Thursday thru Saturday May 3-5) – So this one may be a bit out of the way, but I grew up in Pella going to the Tulip Festival every year, and I couldn’t resist recommending it. There’s an afternoon and lighted evening parade each day, historical tours, and people around town dancing in Dutch costumes. It’s more fun than a person should have.
The Called to Love Tour is coming to Cedar Falls Thursday May 10th. The tour includes Aaron Shust, Downhere, and Jason Gray. So Mike invited Aaron to join in the Afternoon Show and talk about his latest album, the tour, and what he does in his spare time. If you missed any part of the interview, you can catch up by listening online below. If you want tickets for the show, get them here.

For Food Friday this week, I thought I’d look for something that the kids might enjoy. So I headed to the “For Kids” section of Recipes.com and found this. Personally, it sounds tasty for adults too. It’s a Cheeseburger and Fries Pie. I’ve got the recipe below. You can find more recipes at Recipe.com. Here’s the direct link for this recipe.
Ingredients
-
2 packages (4.25 ounces each)extra-crispy microwave-ready fries
-
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
-
1 small onion, diced
-
1/2 pound lean ground beef
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
1/2 cup ketchup
-
1/4 cup beef or chicken broth
-
1 package refrigerated piecrusts (2 crusts)
-
2 tablespoons chopped hamburger-pickle slices
- 8 slices cheddar or American cheese
Directions
- Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Prepare fries according to package directions, then cut into bite-size pieces. In a skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat and add onion. Cook until soft, about 6 minutes. Add ground beef and salt and cook, breaking up beef with a spoon, until cooked through, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in ketchup and broth and cook 3 minutes more. Stir in fries and cool 5 minutes. Roll out piecrusts and cut each into quarters. Spoon filling into crusts. Top with pickles and a slice of cheese. Fold edges of crust up to form packets; seal edges. Place on a baking sheet and bake 20 minutes.
If you’re on the search for something to do this weekend that gets the entire family out of the house, check out these ideas:
- N0rth Cedar Fun Fair (Friday April 27) – There’s going to be laser tag, inflatables, carnival games, and more. Could it be too much fun? Possibly.
- Cedar Rapids Antique Show and Sale (Sunday April 29) – Check out some cool antiques and maybe pick up something for your home. Or at least dream about picking up something for your home.
- Lampost Theatre presents: Superhereos - (All Weekend) They’ve got another slate of shows for this weekend. According to the Community Calendar it’s “six people, one cape and a whole lotta secret identity.” Tickets are $15.
Of course, you can always find great events (and share about events you’re part of planning) on the Community Calendar.
It’s Food Friday, and this week’s recipe involves 3 ingredients. You’ll need a bit to cook it, as it has to sit in the crock-pot, but if you throw it all together around lunch, you’re good to go for dinner.
Ingredients
- Turkey Breast (Can use chicken breast instead)
- 1 can of cranberries
- 1 pkg onion soup mix
Directions
- Throw it all in the crock-pot and cook for 4 hours. Voila!
