Operation Christmas Child

As you prepare for Christmas with your family, Operation Christmas Child has a simple way you and your family can give the message of Jesus Christ to children and families around the world.

Simply pack a shoebox with toys, toiletries and school supplies for children in developing countries.  Samaritans Purse then takes those boxes to children around the world sharing with them, their parents and siblings the saving grace of Jesus.  Find out all the details on what to pack and drop off locations near you at Samaritans Purse website.

Alternative Youth Basketball League

Urban Dreams Inc, in conjunction with several Waterloo Agencies and Community Leaders is in the process of forming a female and a male alternative youth basketball league in Waterloo. This league will be open to all youth ages 13-17 years of age. The practices and games will be held at the new Carver Academy on Logan Ave (this school is located two blocks south of Allen Hospital). The female league will run from October 26th and end on December 3, 2009, with the male league beginning January 4th and ending on February 11th, 2010.

This league is being formed to give Waterloo youth an opportunity to participate in a positive activity during the evening hours from 7-9 pm on Mon, Tues and Thurs. Urban Dreams is seeking for volunteers to assist with this league in the role of coaching staff, referees, and to assist with security in /outside of the building.

Walk for Life

Alternatives Pregnancy Center’s Annual Walk for Life event is a fun and casual event to involve and create awareness in our community. Volunteers and those in support of Alternatives Pregnancy Center are encouraged to ask family and friends to sponsor them for the Walk. This is one of three of our largest fundraising events and Alternatives would love for you to be a part of it! Refreshments and entertainment will be provided for the duration of the event. Prizes will be awarded to the most highly sponsored walkers too! First Place Prize: 2 round trip airline tickets anywhere within the 48 contiguous states to be used at least 30 days after scheduling. Second Place: 1 recliner from Slumberland All pledges must be in no later than October 10th, 2009 (the day of the Walk.) All pledges given later than that date will not be eligible to win either prize. Winners will be notified by October 17th, 2009.

Any type of support for Alternatives helps change the lives of many who seek our center for our services.

Hunger Action Month

One in eight Americans go hungry every day, some are children.  That is why The Northeast Iowa Food Bank is asking everone to take action during Hunger Action Month and Give a Little, Feed a lot.

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank can turn a single dollar into $11.91 worth of food to someone in our community living at risk of hunger.

Whether you give a lot or a little find out how you can help make a difference for a hungry family or neighbor.  The North East Iowa Food Bank has a list of 30 ways to fight hunger during the 30 days of September.
