Troop Sendoff in Waterloo

It seems like no matter who you talk to, everyone knows someone in the military.  It could be a relative, spouse, friend, or acquaintance.  This weekend, more men and women we know who serve in the Armed Forces here in Iowa are shipping out.  The 445th Transportation Company has been called up to serve in Iraq. If you’d like to show your support for these brave men and women, there will be an official sendoff in Waterloo at 10am on Saturday at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center.

Getting Out

Today over lunch, my wife expressed her disappointment that it looked like the weather wouldn’t cooperate with us this evening.  She was hoping to go see the Cedar Falls Municipal Band perform.  It turns out that my wife has been doing some digging.  She wants to get out this summer and have some fun, but we both know that the budget is tight.  So she went in search for events that cost little to nothing to attend.  It turns out there are quite a few.  You can find something to do almost every evening if you’d like.  If you’re looking to just get out of the house, here’s a couple of websites to check out: in Waterloo/Cedar Falls, visit the Cedar Valley Calendar of Events, in the Cedar Rapids/Coralville/Iowa City Area, check out the Calendar at the Cultural Corridor.

Flood Rememberance

As we approach thge one year anniversary of the flood, some in the North Cedar area are planning a rememberance service.  The current plan is to hold the service on June 24th from 5-8pm.  You can learn more about the plans on the Courier website here.

School is in!

Growing up, when you got the day off school, it was the greatest thing ever.  Snow days were always fun.  But the problem with snow days is that you have to make them up again at the end of year.  That’s why when I heard Marshalltown Schools were closed due to the H1N1 virus, I wasn’t sure if I’d be happy or sad as a student.  Now the Marshalltown schools are opening back up again starting tomorrow morning. So if your son or daughter is disappointed they have to go back to school, just remind them that at least now they won’t have to school in July.

Voting in Johnson and Linn Counties

Today is another opportunity to let your voice be heard.  If you’re in Johnson County or parts of Linn County, there’s a vote happening on a potential new local option sales tax.  Whether you’re in favor, or opposed, the only way to make your opinion matter is to find the polling place nearest you.  For more information on how to locate that polling place and more info about the vote, check out this article from The Gazette.
