The Simple Life?

So, you’re done with work, and you run off to pick up the kids, stop by the grocery store for some items for dinner, then realize you need to fill up the car on the way home, and while you’re doing that see that you need to call and schedule an oil change when you get home.  As everyone unloads and you start digging around for that recipe, the thought runs through your mind, “I wish things were more simple.”   I have to be honest and tell you that part of me believes it’s not possible to have life be more simple.  But maybe that’s because I’m living in the wrong place;  I just have to move west…to Ames.  In a recent survey, Ames was listed as number 5 on a list of the top ten cities to live “the simple life”. Maybe they can help the rest of us figure it out.

Iowa’s a great place to raise your kids

I have a lot of great memories from growing up: running in the backyard, biking around the neighborhood, trying and failing numerous times to do stunts on a skateboard, and more.  One of the reasons I have those memories is because I felt safe (and I’m sure my parents did as well) where I grew up.  And I’m not the only one.  Iowa recently ranked sixth in a recent KIDS COUNT report for places to raise children. The numbers are based on safety, healthcare rates, and more.  So, now that you know Iowa is a great place for your kids, might I recommend taking advantage of it tonight and getting out to have some fun with your kids?

On the road again

It’s July in Iowa which means it’s time for another RAGBRAI.  RAGBRAI stands for the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.  I’ve always thought RAGBRAI would be a great way to see Iowa.  I’ve just never done it.  There really aren’t that many reasons for that except my lack of dedication to riding bike this year.  When it comes down to it, I’m just glad that RAGBRAI changes which part of Iowa it goes through every year.  It’s a lot easier to not feel guilty when it doesn’t go through your town ever year.

Whooping Cough Warning

Unlike a regular cough, which is no fun, whooping cough is super no-fun and dangerous to boot.  Currently there are 11 reported cases in Buchanan County, and it is pretty contagious.  You’ll want to make sure you follow the usual rules to stay healthy: get lots of sleep, eat healthy, and wash your hands.  If you’d like more information on whooping cough, visit this link. If you’re concerned you might have whooping cough, visit your doctor.

Do Not Feed the Bear

Camping can be a fun, and inexepensive, way to get out with the family.  While my wife and I aren’t the biggest fans of sleeping in a tent on the cold hard ground, we both love the outdoors, campfires, and cooking meals over them.  If you’re looking to get out and camp in Northeast Iowa this year, be aware that there’s a bear out there.  Apparently, a bear has been sighted in Winneshiek and Fayette counties, and officials want to remind you to stay safe and avoid contact with bears and other wild animals.  And that’s good advice, because I don’t think this bear is hanging around to remind you that “only you can prevent forest fires.”
