Distraction of a Husband

It’s official: this football season is upon us.  High school football is starting up again, the NFL kicked off last night, and college football is in swing.  In fact, this weekend is “The Big Game”: Iowa and Iowa State go head to head in our state’s biggest rivalry.  If you’re looking for a safe weekend, it’s best to not pledge your allegiance for either team in public areas, as you never know what might happen.  Also, just a reminder, if you had any weekend projects you were hoping to get done before the end of the year, your husband might not be so much help anymore.

Get out the bug spray

Imagine living in a country where a mosquito bite might not just cause itching but give you a dangerous disease.  Unfortunately, you don’t have to imagine anymore as that could be a possibility in Black Hawk County.  Some chickens were discovered to have West Nile disease and encephalitis and that could mean that mosquitoes are carrying it around right now.  You’ll want to do what you can to protect yourself and your family.  Here are a couple of things that public health officials suggest, courtesy of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier:

•Use insect repellent with DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

•Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

•Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes and socks whenever possible.

•Eliminate standing water around the home, which is a common mosquito breeding ground.

Cleanup Day in Waterloo

It’s easy to dread going down to your basement.  There’s all that stuff down there that you don’t have a use for, but have no way of getting rid of.  And you know every time you go down there, that broken treadmill is going to stare you down.  Thankfully, Waterloo holds an annual cleanup day, where they cut down the charges and allow you to haul a wide variety of odd stuff to the dump.  This year it’s on September 12th, which now that I think about it, might be a good time to get rid of that oven with a broken glass stovetop that’s sitting in my basement.

Sales Tax Weekend

This coming weekend has something that everyone loves: no taxes!  At least no taxes on clothes under $100.  It’s the Sales Tax Holiday in Iowa. Which not only makes for some good deals if you need clothes for the kids for school this year, it also provides an explanation for the flood of people you’re going to run into when you just need to run to Target to pick up some milk.

Is that a sheep?

Last night I was hanging out with some friends and one of them mentioned to me that he saw a sheep outside his house the other day.  This might not have sounded odd except for the fact that he lives in Cedar Falls.  Then he went on to mention that he’d seen a sheep outside his work a few days back as well and wondered if it was the same sheep.  It seems that it most likely was, according the Courier, since a sheep has been eluding authorities for a couple of weeks now.  It’s been wandering around town and every time it’s sighted, before it can be caught it jumps fences or disappears into a cornfield.  Have you seen the Sheep of Black Hawk County?  Share your sheep sightings below.
