Use Facebook wisely

I discovered Facebook shortly after it started, and if you’re part of the larger Facebook community, you know that it can be a great way to keep in touch with friends and let others know how life is going.  However, you have to be careful on Facebook.  Just as with the general internet, it’s better to be a beneficial member than not.  I found a funny article laying out some of the Facebook stereotypes, and thought I’d share some of my favorites:

-Chronicle-your-day Status messages – For example, while it’s cool that I woke up today, but you’ll figure it out once I post something else.

-Self-promotion – Humility is a good rule on Facebook too.  While it can be hard for me to not tell everyone how awesome I am, I have to resist that urge.

-Invitation-mania – I might think my causes, clubs, and that quiz I took to find out what my real hair color should be are cool, but that doesn’t mean you will, so it’s probably best for me to not send out all those invites.

Do you need more sleep?

I think that after they enter college, no one gets as much sleep as they want, and it just continues from there.  But do you ever notice how we rationalize our sleep time to try to make ourselves feel better?  Some will even say, “I got a solid 6 hours last night, so I’m doing well.”  Wrong!  In fact, we need closer to 8 or 8 1/2 hours a night. Only a select few can sleep so little.  Which is something I wish I could explain to my daughter.

Daycation

I’d like to add a word to your vocabulary: Daycation.  A Daycation is basically taking a day trip somewhere.  It’s not too expensive, you end up at home at the end of the day, and you get to see something cool in the area near you.  That was what I was doing yesterday: my wife Amy, daughter Bekah, our friend from Great Britain, Leah, and I, all loaded the car and headed to Dubuque to visit the Mississippi River museum.  Plus on the way on a whim, we stopped by the Field of Dreams.  It was a lot of fun and we only left the state so that we could say we were in three states in one day.  It turns out there are a lot of fun things to do in the great state of Iowa for a day with your family.  I shared my Daycation with you, now what do you suggest for the next Daycation in Iowa?  Where’s your favorite spot?

Stay Sharp with Marriage

I’ve heard it said that those we’re closest too get on our nerves the easiest.  Sometimes, it’s easy to feel like your kids, or your spouse can drive you absolutely nuts.  Actually, it’s quite the opposite, at least in the long run.  Researchers just wrapped up a study that started back in the 70s and discovered that those who were married were less likely to suffer from ailments like dimentia and Alzheimers. Maybe tonight when you get home, you should turn to your spouse and say, “Honey, thanks for keeping me sane…literally.”

Desk Cleaning

I decided today would be the day to clean my desk at home.  It’s covered in a variety of things from my collection of gnomes, to two clocks (one of which doesn’t work), and of course papers, pens, pencils and a pile of other junk.  But when I look at it outright, it seems like a monstrous task.  I just keep putting it off because “Clean your desk” sounds like a huge job.  But here’s what I’ve figured out: if I cut it down to smaller tasks, it seems manageable.  I can throw away the junk on the desk: that’s easy.  And it’s no problem to decide what I don’t need on my desk and box it up.  As long as I take it one step at a time, the huge project turns into an clean up.
