Prevention is Easy

If you want to lost weight, you have to eat right and work out.  If you want to keep drafts out during the winter, you have seal up your windows.  Prevention takes preperation and hard work.  But not all of it.  It turns out that drinking tea can help fight against having a stroke. It doesn’t matter if it’s black or green tea.  I wish all prevention was this easy.

Erasing Bad Memories

What if you could get rid of your bad memories?  Would you do it?  Testing using a blood pressure medication showed a reduction in fear among people who took it, suggesting an affect on memories. Some say this could help people overcome anxieties and remove phobias.  To be honest, I don’t feel great about this.  While I understand that helping people overcome fears is a good thing, messing with memories could be dangerous, even the bad ones.  Though bad memories aren’t fun, they often times help us to learn from our experiences.

Loneliness is…Bad for you?

Loneliness is one of the un-fun parts of life.  Everyone feels lonely at one time or another, but persistent, long-term loneliness isn’t only a bad state of mind to be in, it could also be bad for your health. University of Chicago researchers determined that being isolated from others can up your blood pressure, releases cortisol a stress hormone into the body, and could also increase the chances of developing Alzheimers among other things.  If you’re feeling lonely, it’s time to get out and connect with someone.  There are lots of social connection websites like Facebook, where you can meet other Life 101.9 listeners. And of course, you can always hang out with me each weekday afternoon through your radio!

Fight the Flu

It’s still flu season, and no one wants it.  By this time, you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but you still live in fear that the flu will invade your home.  If the flu does come around to your place, one thing you can do is pump up the humidity.  It turns out that the flu virus spreads more easily in dry air. So in the winter when your house and the air outside are dry, the flu season happens.  To combat this in your home, you can run a humidifier and do what you can to keep the humidity up, but don’t make it too humid, or you could run into problems with things like mold.

The Power of Cheese

There are a lot of easy things you can do to cut down your risk of heart disease.  One the oddest sounding things I’ve heard is grating cheese.  It turns out that cheese can have some saturated fat that in large amounts can contribute to higher cholesterol.  Apparently, when we grate cheese compared to slicing it, we use less  cheese.  I guess you learn something new every day!
