Getting Out

Today over lunch, my wife expressed her disappointment that it looked like the weather wouldn’t cooperate with us this evening.  She was hoping to go see the Cedar Falls Municipal Band perform.  It turns out that my wife has been doing some digging.  She wants to get out this summer and have some fun, but we both know that the budget is tight.  So she went in search for events that cost little to nothing to attend.  It turns out there are quite a few.  You can find something to do almost every evening if you’d like.  If you’re looking to just get out of the house, here’s a couple of websites to check out: in Waterloo/Cedar Falls, visit the Cedar Valley Calendar of Events, in the Cedar Rapids/Coralville/Iowa City Area, check out the Calendar at the Cultural Corridor.

Spring House Work

With a lot of things decreasing in value during the economic downturn, it’s nice to hold on to something that you can increase it’s value.  One of those things is your house.  Spring provides some great opportunities to get out do some regular maintenance on your house.  Some of those projects might sound like things you’d need to hire someone to do, but a good amount of projects just need some motivation and proper instruction.  HGTV has put up a section on their site with just that goal in mind. You kind find easy ways to clean up and improve your house, without calling someone to do it for you.  Unless that person is your husband.

Tipnut

One of my struggles in life is staying clean and organized.  This is one of the reasons that God gave me my wife.  Without her, who knows what kind of a pigsty my place would be.  So when my wife finds somewhere on the web she enjoys that give tips on ways to keep clean, organized, and a variety of other things, I trust that she knows what she’s talking about.  This weekend, she sent me a link for a site called TipNut.  I checked it out and it has a lot of different, well, tips on everything from cleaning and cooking, to crafts.  You can visit for yourself here.

Free Chocolate

I’m a firm believer that there’s something to be said for a hard day’s work.  In order to gain some things, you have to work for them; that can help build character.  But other times, it’s nice to have something for free.  And now, you have a chance at some free chocolate, every Friday. From now through September, the Mars Company is giving away free chocolate to the first people to ask for it through their site each Friday.  You just have to be one of the first 250,000 people to visit RealChocolate.com on Friday, and they’ll send you a coupon.

Honey, is this still good?

I’ve asked that question a lot of times.  I’m standing there with the fridge door hanging open and wondering if I can still use that jar of salsa because I can’t remember when I opened it.  And right now, you hate to throw anything away, because that’s a waste of money.  It’s better to put everything to it’s best use.  But fresh foods and things that aren’t in containers don’t have a printed expiration date.  That’s where StillTasty comes in. It’s a website that lets you put the type of food or food item in the search box, and then the website lets you know how long it stays good.  Then it’s up to you to figure out when you opened it.  It could save you from paying to buy it over again.
