Left Holding the Bag (or Purse)

It’s funny how I still notice things that are different about me since I became a Dad.  Take carrying the purse as an example.

When Amy and I were first going out and even after we were married, I wouldn’t carry the purse.  I wouldn’t even hold it.  If she handed it to me in a store so she could try something on, I would set it down between my feet and stand there until she returned.  I’m totally serious.

Now, the purse has become another part of the baggage for the entourage.  With Bekah along, you need the diaper bag, maybe a blanket, a snack cup, etc.  When we step out of the car on Sunday morning, you have two choices: the child or the stuff (which includes the purse).

Just the other day, a friend complimented me on my coordination.  “Good job,” he said.  “Your purse matches your shoes.”  I just smiled and said, “Thanks.”  It’s all part of being a dad.

Honda Recall

Back when I owned my old ‘91 Honda Civic, there was a day I was driving and all the sudden my brakes sunk down and I had to push really hard to get the car to stop.  I brought it in to have it looked at and it turned out that I had a broken brake line.  That’s not the problem with 2007-8 Honda Odysseys and Elements, but it’s still disconcerting when your brakes don’t respond like they should.  Due to complaints, these vehicles are being recalled to have some of those brake parts replaced, and the recall is scheduled to start on April 19th.  Honda has more details at their website here.

Free Software

I have always been a huge fan of free and open-source software.  If I can find a program that works as well or better than a major product and it’s free, I’ll give it a shot.  It turns out there are not a small amount of free programs you could try on your computer.  PC World put together a list of 112 free programs. If you’re looking for something to backup your files, free internet filtering software, or a free Photoshop alternative, check out the list.
