School is back

The school year may have snuck up on us, but it’s here now.  And as with any start and new “year” it’s an opportunity to look ahead.  So what’re your hopes, dreams, and prayers for your kids as they head back to school this year?  Let me know and encourage other parents in Eastern Iowa by leaving a comment below.

Toyota Recalls

Even though the summer is winding down and school is in full swing, I think we can all be thankful that snow isn’t here yet.  I’m just not quite ready to slip and slide around the roads on my way to work and where ever else.  It turns out that owners of some recent Toyotas can be thankful as well.  Toyota is recalling 95,000 of their 2009 and 2010 Corollas as well some 2008 and 2009 Scion vehicles.  The reason? In the winter, ice can build up on the brakes making it difficult to stop (which is difficult enough in Iowa during the winter the way it is.).  You can learn more about the recall here.

Hours of fascination

This past weekend and beginning of the week, my wife Amy, daughter Rebekah, dog Starbuck, and I all piled into the car and headed north to visit Amy’s family.  We hung out, relaxed, let Grandpa and Grandma hang out with Bekah while we slept in, and more.  The big outing of the weekend though, was into the Twin Cities to the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. There, we met up with some friends from the area as well my brother, sister and her husband.  We saw all sorts of animals like lions and tigers (but no bears).  And yet somehow, just like when we visited the Mississippi River Museum, Bekah’s favorite part was the fish.  I swear she could sit and watch the fish swim by (or anything swim by for that matter) for hours and hours.  In fact, as I was thinking about it today, I wonder if I shouldn’t just put an aquarium in her room.  She could just watch that if she woke up in the middle of the night.

It’s quiet…

It’s finally happened: the school year has started.  Suddenly, during the day and even the early afternoon during sports it can seem quiet and almost empty in the house.  The quiet could drive you nuts if you’ve adjusted to the regular cacophony, but it could also allow your mind and creativity to increase.  The question becomes, now what?  What are you going to do now that the kids are back in school?  Any projects you’ve been waiting to tackle and now you can?  Let me know in the comments below!
