Daycation

I’d like to add a word to your vocabulary: Daycation.  A Daycation is basically taking a day trip somewhere.  It’s not too expensive, you end up at home at the end of the day, and you get to see something cool in the area near you.  That was what I was doing yesterday: my wife Amy, daughter Bekah, our friend from Great Britain, Leah, and I, all loaded the car and headed to Dubuque to visit the Mississippi River museum.  Plus on the way on a whim, we stopped by the Field of Dreams.  It was a lot of fun and we only left the state so that we could say we were in three states in one day.  It turns out there are a lot of fun things to do in the great state of Iowa for a day with your family.  I shared my Daycation with you, now what do you suggest for the next Daycation in Iowa?  Where’s your favorite spot?

We Volunteer

Sometimes, volunteering your time can be pretty thankless.  That’s why I want to take this opportunity to pat you on the back and say “Good work!”  I know you’ve been working hard, because I read an article in Courier today that pointed out that Iowa City, Waterloo-Cedar Falls, and Cedar Rapids all rank in the top 20 cities of their size for volunteerism.  I think that’s something to be proud of.  I also want to encourage you to keep it up.  If you’re looking for more volunteer opportunities, check out our home page for more information about Habitat for Humanity, the Back to School Project, and the Ministry of the Month.

7 Wonders of Nature

I don’t know about you, but I’m glad we live on Earth.  The other planets are just kind of boring in comparison.  If we lived on Mars, it’s just be red sand everywhere.  The moon is just covered in lighter colored dirt.  Instead, we got deserts, green forests, waterfalls, mountains, geysers, and the list goes on.  I don’t think it’s possible to get bored seeing all the world has to offer.  And now, you have the chance to vote on some of the most beautiful places on earth.  Voting is taking place online and by phone for the 7 Wonders of Nature.  I checked out the list and the choice might be hard.  Though one of the decisions is easy: the Grand Canyon is the only option in the U.S.  Looks like I need to do my patriotic duty.  You can vote online if you want here.

Children’s Shoe Recall

A good shoe is an important piece of clothing.  A bad shoe can hurt your posture, your feet, your back, and end up hurting your day.  Plus, it’s a serious bummer to realize your shoe is falling apart.  But the latest recall isn’t for your shoes, it’s for your kids.   About 1.4 million Buster Brown children’s clogs are being recalled after it was a discovered that the decorative wheels on the shoes could come loose.  Thankfully there haven’t been any injuries due to these shoes yet, but you’ll probably want to get them returned soon just to be safe.  You can find more info here.
