Getting out with the Grill

This past weekend, some of Amy’s family was in town and picked up a very early anniversary present for us in the form of a new grill.  The only other grill we own is a small camping charcoal grill.  It’s done the job, but I’ve been ready for something bigger that didn’t require me to hunch over for a little while now.  Unfortunately, my schedule and the weather have been working against me.  Hopefully I’ll be able to assemble it Thursday night and the grilling season can officially restart at my house.  And it looks like the weather this weekend could be in favor of getting out a bit more.  What are you going to do with all this good weather?  Let me know!

Addicted to Video Games?

Ever ask your son to do something and he doesn’t respond because he’s concentrating really hard on his video game?  My wife has that with me sometimes.  Part of that is my enjoyment of the game and part of it is my complete inability to pay attention to more than one thing at a time.  However, while video games can be fun, they can also have an affect on your kids you’ll want to watch out for.  Everything is good in moderation, but if playing video games is causing bad grades, an inability to concentrate on things, or anti-social behaviour, you may want to be concerned.  Some personal tips I might suggest to avoid video game addiction that I’m hoping to have for my kids someday include setting a time for video games and a time limit for the day, making sure outdoor play is a part of every day (when it’s nice enough out of course),  and making sure homework and chores are done first.  Just like everything else, too much of a good thing is a very bad thing.

Where’s the Drummer?

I had a great time hanging out at the concert on Saturday.  5 bands in one night was quite the experience (though it was also quite loud).  One thing I noticed, and perhaps you did too, was the absence of Robby Shaffer, MercyMe’s drummer.  They had a replacement drummer for the night, but the mohawked man was nowhere to be seen.  I didn’t know why, so I grabbed my brother-in-laws cell phone with a data plan and went to Robby’s Twitter to find out where he was.  It turns out, he has a perfectly good excuse for not being there.  He and his wife had a new baby daughter on Thursday! So he was busy not sleeping.  Congratulations Robby!

Exploding Fitness Balls

I have a friend who sits on one of those fitness balls in place of a chair in his office.  He says it’s good for posture and your back, which I don’t doubt.  But I always wondered, what if the ball suddenly popped.  That wouldn’t be good for your back.  That’s a concern with some fitness balls manufactured by EB Brands, which came with bad instructions.  Apparently, following those directions could cause you to overinflate the ball, which could then pop or explode while you’re sitting or exercising on it.  For information on whether your fitness ball is affected, click here.

Anxiety

Bekah had stranger anxiety, now she’s moved on to separation anxiety.  I love spending time with Bekah.  It’s great to see her smile, play with her, and make her laugh.  The problem comes at night.  She can be totally asleep, and as soon as you lay her down in her crib, she wakes up and starts crying.  This continues until she’s screaming as loud as she can, and is so worked up it takes a good half hour to calm her down to the point of sleep again.  I guess we’ve overcome one anxiety, so we can do another.  The big difference is that stranger anxiety didn’t keep US up at night.
