It’s kind of solid

Bekah’s just a little over 6 months old now.  Now that I think of it, that means it’s been a half year since she was born.  That went fast.  Since she’s six months old, we’ve started on solid food.  Or at least as solid as it gets.  Amy’s been making our own baby food, grinding and mashing up sweet potatoes, bananas, and squash among other things and then freezing it into ice cubes for use later.  This means we’ve also moved into the messy stage.  Rather then a little milk dripping off her chin after meals, now we’re in need of bibs and we can determine what’s being eaten by the color of paste all over her face.  It’s pretty cute.

Fight pain with food

A bump, a bruise, a cut, or a scrape are the sorts of things your kids encounter day to day.  And they depend on you to make them better again.  Maybe you’ve heard that when you hurt, you should try to think happy thoughts, to ignore the pain.  Instead, maybe you should encourage your kids to think of happy meals.  Researchers from the University of Wisconsin have found that pain is eased when we turn our thoughts to food.  The downside of course is that once we’re all patched up, we’re still hungry.

White Vinegar? Or White Gold?

I’m not the best at cleaning, so the easier something is to clean or the simpler a cleaning job can be made, the better.  That’s why white vinegar seems so cool.  Last year, I learned that white vinegar would take water spots off dishes.  Then I learned it takes the scent out of nasty clothes if you put a little in the wash.  During the winter I found out that it’ll take salt-stains off your shoes.  And now I learn the you can spray it on weeds in the walk and driveway and it’ll take care of them.  I almost want to sprinke it all over my house to just to see what improves.  Except I know that the smell wouldn’t.

Flu of the Pigs

There’s a lot of talk of swine flu running around, and to be honest, it can sound pretty scary.  Not only does the disease sound relatively contagious, but who really wants a disease that a pig had once?  In all seriousness, one of the most important things to do in this kind of situation is to not freak out.  The CDC (Center for Disease Control) offers these tips to help prevent the spread of swine flu:

-Most importantly: Wash Your Hands

-Stay in good general health: Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

-Avoid touching surfaces that could be contaminated.

-Finally, avoid close contact with those who are sick.

Tut tut, it looks like rain

Last night, the tornado sirens went off near our house, so after grabbing the baby, the dog, and the small tv with a line of cable, we trekked into the basement to wait it out.  Now, I should mention that I was in the basement earlier that afternoon, around 1pm and there was a little water creeping in around one wall.  That’s pretty typical fare for us.  This time, after 6pm, we were greeted with the sight of water bubbling up out of cracks in the floor.  Thankfully, this is the second time we’ve had a lot of water in the basement, so everything in the basement was already in a plastic bin, off the floor, or was trash.  As we helped the water along to the floor drain, where it flowed out of the house, it reminded me that as much as I wanted to have a nice finished tv room in the basement, it was nights like these I was thankful I didn’t have one.
