Hope You Don’t Need It Soon

Everywhere you turn, you’re hearing about businesses making cuts.  Now those cuts are even coming to the Post Office.  The most recent idea for making those cuts includes eliminating a day of mail delivery. Most likely Saturday would be eliminated from the rounds, so you’d only receive mail Monday thru Friday.  This seems like an interesting idea, especially since the alternative seems to be raising the price of stamps and shipping every few weeks.  (It feels like that sometimes anyway.)   What do you think?  Is it better increase the price of stamps even more? Or just cut a day off of mail delivery?  Let me know by dropping a comment below!

Rockin’ Baby?

My wife Amy and I are both musical people.  I sing and play the drums.  Amy sings and plays flute and piano.  So we’re both pretty hopeful that Bekah will be musical as well.  That’s why I was excited to read a story on babies and rhythm today.  It turns out that babies can understand rhythm, at least to the point where it bothers them when it’s off.

Scientists analyzed the brains of infants as they listened to a beat played out by drums.  When one part, like the cymbals, were removed, the children would continue to listen.  But when a part of the beat went missing, the error portions of the brain would become active.  I guess this means if I screw up playing drums on Sunday morning, there’s one more person who’ll notice.

Don’t Leave Your Pet Unattended

It seems ironic that during the winter, the coldest months of the year, we hear the most about fire safety.  However, due to the fact that many including myself use more than their furnace to heat parts of their home.  At our house, our upstairs is cold, so we run a space heater.  I do my best to turn it off if I’m not up there, but there have been times where I’ve woken up in the morning to find a very warm upstairs because I’ve left the space heater running all night.

Things don’t always work out that well.  At one mans home, he was using a space heater to thaw some pipes, when his cat knocked some towels onto the heater. The fire caused some damage to the bathroom and some smoke damage to parts of the house, but luckily no one was injured.  It’s just another good reminder that when you’re taking extra measures to keep your house warm, you can’t be too safe.

Free Sports

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend (after you’ve seen Chris Tomlin in concert, of course), you can get into UNI athletic events this weekend just by saying “Kurt Warner” at the door.  To celebrate Kurt Warner (UNI Alumni) and Arizona Cardinals making to the big game, you can use his name to get in free to all the UNI athletic events this weekend including Women’s Basketball and Track and Field events.

Daddy Wins!

Last night I got home, and as I walked in the door, I heard the baby crying.  She wasn’t really screaming, just occasionally crying, almost whining it sounded like.  I took my jacket off and headed into the living room and asked Amy how it was going.  She told me that Bekah had been fussy and not very happy all afternoon, so she was just trying to get some work done.

I sat down on the couch right in front of the bouncer seat, looked at Bekah and said “Have you been giving Mommy a hard time?”  She was immediately quiet.  Then she looked at me and a huge smile broke across her face.  Instead of crying, she started “talking” to me all about her day (I think.)  Amy just looked at her, looked at me, and then rolled her eyes.
